September 2004Surface Optics is awarded by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR-4.1.8) a contract to manufacture the SOC 410 Directional Hemispherical Reflectometers to be used for inspection of coatings on advanced aircraft. The contract is a Phase III SBIR. May 2004Surface Optics delivers to the Naval Air Systems Command two prototypes of the SOC 410 Hand Held Reflectometer. 2004SOC delivers its first DuoChrome (SWIR/MWIR) multispectral sensor. This camera becomes a baseline sensor for military threat warning systems. Surface Optics awarded a Phase III SBIR for production of a Hand-held Reflectometer (SOC-410) to be used for acceptance tests on naval aircraft. Also in 2003SOC Leases additional facilities for instrument manufacturing and implements ISO-9000 quality assurance program. A cast of each actor's head was sent to a company called Arius 3D, makers of ultrahigh-resolution scanners employed in 1999 to archive the works of Michelangelo. The Arius scanner is accurate down to 25 microns - the diameter of a mold spore. To get the clothing simulations just right, ESC sent swatches of Reeves' black cassock and Weaving's jacket to a company called Surface Optics, which builds devices to measure a property of light called the bidirectional reflectance distribution function. Surface Optics happened to have one machine on hand scheduled to ship to Lockheed Martin a month later, where it was to be assigned to its usual task: evaluating the reflectivity of paint on stealth bombersTo see the instrument used, click on the link below For a full reprint of the article, click on the link below
