RadBase (Radar Cross Section Simulation and Analysis)

RadBase is a fully validated, user-friendly commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software system for generating accurate Radar Cross Section (RCS) and Amplitude and Phase data for both complex targets and cultural features. RadBase is a Java-based application, allowing it to run seamlessly on Windows 95®/98®/ NT® and Unix® platforms. The analysis and modeling-and-simulation communities are using RadBase for a variety of applications including:

  • Radar simulations
  • Target signature analysis
  • Radar system analysis
  • Radar performance
  • Radar design
  • SAR simulation
  • Human factors studies
  • Radar operator training
  • Radar database generation

Surface Optics Corporation's (SOC) radar engineering group, in cooperation with Analytical Graphics Inc., redesigned RadBase to work in concert with STK/Radar. RadBase now reads an STK(r) .mdl file directly and a new custom STK panel was added. The output of RadBase is a RCS file that plugs directly into STK/Radar. The user can also develop RCS databases that plug directly into MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc.'s, RadarWorks(tm) product.

RadBase's "Custom" option allows users to develop tailor made radar databases whose output format is fully documented in the User's Guide. The output data can then be post processed or read into any radar product on the market.

Key Features

Accuracy and speed on a PC or Workstation. A Java-based application, RadBase is unique in that it is the only fully validated radar database generation software package that runs on multiple platforms. Its revolutionary algorithms make RadBase faster than any other radar scattering software package available.

Supports many 3-D model formats. RadBase supports many 3-D model formats used in the radar community. These include STK (mdl), OpenFlight(tm), Object(obj) and Demaco (Xpatch) formats. Future versions of RadBase will support other standard formats as well.

User-Friendly Inputs. RadBase does not require the user be a radar expert. Its inputs are very intuitive and all parameters are entered through the user-friendly GUI. Inputs include frequency (.2-100 GHz), incident angles, azimuth angles, number of bounces, blocking options, facet material information, edge diffraction options and output format.

SAR image generation. The Amplitude & Phase data from RadBase can be used in post processing routines to generate high-resolution SAR imagery of the object.

Flexibility. RadBase gives users the ability to run an application and produce databases on the scores of inexpensive PC desktop and notebook computers typically found in government and commercial facilities. You no longer need to dedicate your high-end SGI for weeks or months at a time to obtain RCS databases. This task can now be completed in about one-tenth the time. This is especially critical for planning and rehearsing military training operations in simulators for upcoming missions. The data produced is ideally suited for both commercial and military applications.
