Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function, BRDF

Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) describes directional dependence of the reflected energy. BRDF is a fundamental optical property. It characterizes the energy scattered into the hemisphere above a surface as a result of incident radiation. The geometry of the BRDF definition is shown in figure below.

The BRDF is defined as the ratio of the reflected radiance (w-m-2-sr-1) in a particular direction (Thetar,Phir) to the incident irradiance (w-m-2) from direction (Thetai,Phii).
